Sales of FF 16 & FF 7 Rebirth Failed to Meet SE's Expectations

A shift to a multiplatform strategy becomes more urgent.

The sales of Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth did not meet the expectations of Square Enix. This is according to SE President Takashi Kiryu, who shared the commercial performance of these titles during Square Enix’s Financial Results Briefing session held in May.

In the financial results made public recently, Kiryu said: “In the HD Games sub-segment, we released multiple new titles, including major titles such as ‘FINAL FANTASY XVI' and ‘FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH,’ but profits unfortunately did not meet our expectations.”

Notably, back in May, a financial report revealed that Square Enix did not meet its sales and operating income targets for the year and, therefore, would embrace an aggressive multiplatform strategy to include PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and PC.

A month before their announcement, an industry analyst said Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was “underperforming,” a piece of information obtained via “equities research reports, who are getting the data from the usual trackers.” However, there has been no official announcement about the accurate sales number to date.

Regarding Final Fantasy 16, the latest title in the franchise, which was launched exclusively on PS5 in June last year and just got the PC version this Tuesday, Square Enix was once satisfied with the initial sales results. It had an “extremely strong” performance, selling three million units globally a few days after launch. But it seems the momentum didn't last long, and more than a year after the release, the sales went lower than the company’s expectations.

Despite the fact that both titles fail to meet sales expectations, the FF franchise is free from “existential risk,” according to the FF16 director Hiroshi Takai, who shared some insights on the franchise's future last month.
