A Dark Fantasy RPG Shooter by Ex Painkiller & Bulletstorm Devs

The Astronauts, an independent game development studio, formed by former developers behind acclaimed titles like Painkiller and Bulletstorm, has announced that their first-person dark fantasy RPG shooter, Witchfire, is now available in Early Access on Steam.

The game sets you on perilous expeditions as a witch hunter who will fight against the Witch of the Black Sea and her fellows. There is a vast area with extensive biomes to explore, and players are given the freedom to decide the battleground to fight the enemies. “Each completed encounter strengthens you and your arsenal through the roguelite system called Arcana. There are countless ways to build your preyer and dominate the witch,” reads the game’s description. 

During each expedition, you have the option to either retrieve your looted items or challenge the Familiars, the witch’s powerful guardians, to access new areas,  powerful items, and upgrades. 

The game was initially unveiled at the 2017 The Game Awards, and the second demo was released in 2019. In September 2023, it was launched on the Epic Games Store. The latest version contains three major updates: The Ghost Galleon, The Wailing Tower, and High Stakes.
