"We got laid off, so we made a game about getting laid off. "
Video games usually immerse you in faraway magical worlds, letting you experience something you can't do in real life. That's probably not the case with this indie game, which is called You Got Laid Off. It was created by indie developers Kevin Lee and Max Hsu, who have now formed a studio named Satirical.Biz.
The game is a job application simulator in which you take on the role of a laid-off protagonist named You and navigate the job market, applying for thousands of jobs, building up your motivation index, and spending it on upgrades. Check out gameplay footage showcased by the developers:
The inspiration for the game lay in the devs' personal experience when they were let go of their jobs in 2023. They decided to use their skills and free time and create something relatable for many people. "We could make lemonade out of lemons and create something that people could really resonate with," the creators humorously note. They share that this game, in some sense, commemorates their story of being laid off as well as that of many other developers, because over the past few years, the video games industry has seen an enormous amount of job cuts.
The creators wanted to make You Got Laid Off a simple and humorous experience with a distinct aesthetic style. The game features nostalgic pixelated visuals that are reminiscent of hand-drawn cartoons from the late 90s and early 2000s. The jobs that are mentioned in the game are also hilarious and include, for instance, Office Buble Maker, Lawn Flamingo Breeder, Coffee Stirring Agent, First Impression Giver, Office Printerologist, and more:
